There are countless examples of how African Americans have transformed history or made a mark on our country. African Americans have displayed heroism and bravery for what we believe in. Without Black History Month as a holiday, these people would not have been recognized for all of their many achievements. We must continue to celebrate the achievements of African Americans, and we must correct the inconsistences of the past. Black History Month should be kept as a national holiday as long as we are the United States of America. Black History Month was not intended to last an entire month. In fact, it was not even meant to last until the twenty-first century. Carter G. Woodson was the founder of Black History month, but at the time, it†¦show more content†¦For over one hundred years, textbooks have been leaving out critical information about our history, and then feeding it to our children. Currently, when a child is taught history, the information typically consists of many white people fighting white people and one side losing. Although the textbooks represent the whites more than the blacks, it was not always the whites who led our side to victory. Many blacks people have been responsible for contributing to the United States’ great name of the most powerful nation in the world. One example of black individuals who have been left out and led our country to battle was The War of 1812. A group called the Battalion of Free Men of Color played a significant role in this historic battle. The group consisted of black slaves who wished to defend their country in combat. According to Sam Houston State University (SHSU), the battle ended up being â€Å"the worst defeat suffered by British arms in years†. This may be true, however, the blacks were not and still are not credited for being such an asset to our country. â€Å"Ironically, the black role was soon overlooked, as black veterans were not permitted to march in the annual parades celebrating the victory† (SHSU). Another example of African Americans who were not recognized for their support to an historical event was the American Revolution. â€Å"At the 1876 Centennial Celebration of the Revolution in Philadelphia, not a single speaker acknowledged the contributions of African
